A Wonderful Break...Time for Action

get your photshop actions here Well...you know me by now. There's never such thing as a real break for me.

But this past week since I put client projects on hold for the holidays, I have been busy with a few projects of my own.

I have been contracted to teach a course at our local college so I have been designing lesson plans and assignments - Web Design for Photographers. (But it will be soooo much more than mere design, it will be about how to use your website to power your studio, or photography business!)

But more fun for you right now, is I have "packaged" my infrared workflow into a set of Photoshop Actions. Now, these aren't freebies because these actions contain my own special techniques for creating award winning infrared photographs. You won't find these anywhere else on the Web (yet). Only serious devotees of the infrared style should use these. They are powerful actions and should be only used by "trained professionals"!!!! (smile) {{But they are less expensive than a tank of gas, a new CF card,or even a couple of burgers for lunch!}}

If you don't know what Photoshop actions are visit my Photoshop Actions page here. Opens a new window)

But whatever you do, check them out. I may not be able to offer them indefinitely.

Warmest Wishes for the Holiday Season!

It comes around so fast! Between client orders and my own "selfish" pursuits, I find I'm once again amazed at how the time flies. It must be powered by one of those super reindeer from up north!

So thank you, for supporting this website with your comments, ideas, questions, purchases, the odd click or two on the ads :-), and for making it possible for me to do what I LOVE.

I hope that in the coming months I'll be able to return the favour again, by helping you to do more of what you love. I have a rather comprehensive plan for 2008 and you are the central focus of all the activity! More tutorials, more tricks, more cool stuff to help you advance your craft.

So have a great Christmas no matter where you are!

And thanks from a happy clicker. I promise I'll get those D300 images up on the weekend. You've gotta see them :-)

It's That Time

For all you worker bees that look at this site "on the job" I'll make my final seasons greeting post to you tomorrow. (smile).

For you die hard photographers what are always on the web looking for new tips and ticks to improve your skills and creative energy, I'll be posting a few more D300 tricks over the holidays, along with those long awaited images.

And if you're a newsletter subscriber, your goodies are coming your way soon.

But if Santa does bring you a Nikon D300 for Christmas, I won't expect to see you back here for a while!

Now, I have an album, a book and strategic plan to finish. Catch ya tomorrow.

Finally got the bug fixed on Photo Show & Tell.. Check it out.

And with the weather finally warming up (ha!) and with some inspiration from some talented Nikon D300 users, I'm heading out to shoot Christmas Lights, there's a big display of some kind, I'm not sure what to expect, but in typical North American suburban fashion, this is a DRIVE THRU display! Must be sponsored by Tim Horton's, eh.

So if all goes well, and the shots look as good as some are saying they can, I will share some D300 joy with you on Thursday.

And conditions seem to be right for a foggy misty sunrise this morning so if I can get a few hours of sleep asap, I'll get up in time for the dawn and see what develops!!!

It's YOUR Turn

In the run up to the Holidays, I was thinking that I should have a contest of some kind so I can give away a prize...

But in the midst of trying to install Photoshop CS3, I thought that it shouldn't be a contest as such, but it SHOULD be something semi-competitive. Like Show & Tell.

So now's your chance to show off and "gimme your best shot".There's a small bug on the page right now so I won't give you the link, but it will be here before the end of the week.

BUG fixed: here's where to go for Photo Show & Tell.

So while you wait for me to fix it, tell me, what do you want for Christmas? I give away plenty of freebies to my subscribers each year in the Christmas/Channukah/Solstice/Festivus newsletter. But you can always twist my arm for something different.

Subscribe now and if you're a good photographer you'll get your gift(s). If not, a virtual lump o' coal is coming your way.

(kidding - patiently waiting for Facebook to start doing Coal Lumps!!!!)

A Frigid Blast

Baby, it's COLD outside. So it's been a week or so since I got the D300 but I haven't really been able to use it. This winter cold snap is ridiculous - 25 C some days with the windchill is has been equivalent to -40! Guess that's why we call it Winterpeg!

You know I'm not a fragile wimp, but I AM a heat lover and just the thought of being outdoors in this makes me shiver.

In January or February I have no problem strapping on the snowshoes and heading into the bush for a few hours to shoot, with sunny skies and -35 I can bundle up and be just fine. But I haven't acclimatized yet. Even my poor dog hasn't had time to grow his winter coat, poor boy.

I'm hoping for more balmy temps this week, and with two weeks away from "work" coming up, I will have no problems getting the D300 into action very soon.

I DO have some funny D300 pics of an old guy in a red suit though, stay tuned....

Brrrrrrrrr.

You can get in on Nikon's Secret Deal

Ok, so it's not a huge secret, but many of the pro's I hang out with didn't know. it's true, the people at Nikon seem to want to add a little mystery to your life if you buy a Nikon D300 (or D3). It's their BEST kept secret.

Have you bought your D300 camera yet? If you have, you may be in for a little treat. Check the side of your Nikon box - the one the camera came in. Look for a blue sticker that says Nikon Release Campaign. Capture NX.

It says Capture NX is included! (Now you may wonder what the use of Capture is, with reports of all versions being slow, non-intuitive, and somewhat redundant). However there are a few benefits of Capture - two of which I know well. And you should come to know too:

1) If you shoot infrared on a Nikon with a filter or a modified Nikon body, you'll want Capture NX. The white balance is rendered much more accurately that in PS CS2 (or 3) ACR.

2) If you use the Nikon 10.5 mm fish eye lens, there's a nifty little lens correction tool built in to Capture that extends the utility of your lens tremendously.

Previously, you'd have to pay Nikon to buy Capture NX, despite the fact that you just shelled out mega bucks for a camera. The forums are ripe with discussions on the cheapness of Nikon's approach to this, but maybe they are listening now-because the Release Campaign does indeed give you a full working copy of Capture for free.

BUT, and this is a big but (no comments from the peanut gallery!), Nikon for some reason make you search for this "prize" like you were in a prime time reality show scavenger hunt. You see, it doesn't necessarily come inside the box. And there are no instructions on what the campaign is about, or if you've guessed that you're entitled to a freebie, how to access it, since the CD is not part of the stuff you get with your camera.

Here's how to get your free version of Capture NX if you have a release campaign sticker on your Nikon D300 (or D3, I'm told) box.

Go to Nikon's site and download the free trial of NX. In your registration and warranty papers that DO come in the box, you'll see a small flyer that says Capture NX and a bunch of info in various languages. It's so unassuming and bland you may be tempted to toss it in the recycling bin. DON'T!!!!

As you read it, you see that it is trying to tell you that this document is your Capture NX product key that will unlock the trial. But a thorough search of all languages, and all sides of this paper, reveal absolutely NO numerical info what so ever.

By now, if you've followed this process on your own with no success, you're probably wondering if is this was a cruel Nikon joke or what!? No joke, for some reason, at the bottom of this sheet is a black strip that looks like someone took a felt pen to the bottom of the page. This strip is actually a sticker. Carefully peel back the black strip to reveal your product code.

Enter this when you run Capture NX and "presto!" you have your gift from Nikon.

And if you have a quantuum of energy left after this ordeal, you'll be delighted to PP your D300 images, or D3 pics with your free Nikon Capture NX software!

The new NIKON D300 has ARRIVED!

I don't think I've been as excited about getting a camera as I have been about the Nikon D300 that arrived at my studio today.

Having it my hands was almost a mystical experience. Now, while the battery is charging, I'm reading through the Manual (yeah for the first time) and anticipating the power of this little gem. But I had to tell you that it was here. I have to tell someone!!! My staff aren't too excited - "there she goes again with the new toys..."

Anyway, I will be posting real photos from the D300 here over the next couple of days and putting it through the usual tests. I did a few things before the battery died and I have to say the jimbo viewfinder (almost 3" across)is quite remarkable. For all of us over 30 this is a huge benefit. :-)

Now I have to come up with a plan to help make this new acquisition pay...so engage me to be your documentary photographer - to shoot your events, corporate parties, charity fundraisers (I had a pretty phenomenal response to the images I shot for the Guardian Angels Benefit, PLUS I've just gotten into a deal with a great coffee table photo book publisher-these make fab items for sponsors, donors and organizations. An amazing keepsake for sure). Hey, a great photographer AND a state-of-the-art camera is all you need...

OK enough advertising. Stay tuned for more about the remarkable Nikon D300.

The Zen of Chocolate

I don't normally promote things (except myself of course! :-) ) but friends of mine just opened a new upscale bakery on Osborne St - Chocolate Zen.

I don't know if you've heard of "The Gates" Restaurant (no, no, not that Gates!), but The Gates is a very trendy restaurant out in the sticks on the other end of town, and the baking team there left to open their own place - Chocolate Zen.

I have the privilege of taking their promo shots and some images for their upcoming new website. Yummy.

Here's just a small taste for you...hmmmmmm...chocolate...

Go there NOW - 553 Osborne Street, Winnipeg. And remember their tagline: Save the Earth: its the only planet with chocolate!

Don't wanna live like an evacuee

Hello again. I missed you. Too busy playing with my new lens to sit down for a moment to chat...more about this in a minute.

I was evacuated from my office this week when some backhoe demon ripped up a natural gas line in the alley. It was an interesting few hours since my car was parked in the danger zone I couldn't get to it to get home. So I hovered around with my camera (of course), and took a few shots.

Also evacuated was the welfare hotel across the street. Not meaning any disrespect to those who live there, it did look like most of them never see the sun. I'm also guessing that many of them, even at 2:00 in the afternoon, were awakened from sleep to be roused out into the street to supposed safety. However one poor soul didn't seem at all to be wanting to be removed.

See the pics of the day they almost blew up Albert Street. . (I know some people who think this would be a good idea - grrrrrr.)

Now that lens...the Nikon 12 - 24 mm wide angle zoom. Here's my mini review. With sample shots.

Recharge

Well, I have not much news or exciting tidbits from the world of photography, for you today. It's thankfully been a quiet few days.

I have been meaning to get a nice long massage for the last couple of weeks and now's probably a good time...I really must get better ergonomically organized, from sitting at a computer for hours on end with no regard for posture, to my total lack of grace and coordination in the field, with a 20 lb bag of equipment over one shoulder - it all leaves me with aches and pains of all sorts. But nothing a good massseur can't fix (hehehe).

Yes, now's the time! Why not go get one for yourself? You deserve it too.

Scary Times Boys & Girls! Let it be a drag.

It's the night before Halloween, or Gate Night. Long before there were graffiti artists, taggers and bombers, there were "us." The Gate Night hacks who used to cause mischief in the neighbourhood on the night before Halloween.

But not any more, not that I'd say I'm too old for mischief - far from it, but now it's not so quaint spending a night in jail or so charming regaling friends about the risky exploits of random silliness. Now, I choose my risks wisely!

No, no random acts of vandalism for me tonight. Right now I'm playing with my new 12-24 Nikon wide angle zoom lens and getting ready for some evening shooting tomorrow on THE night. Out here, so many people decorate their barns, transforming them into fabulous haunted houses, costuming their horses into ghost beasts right out of Sleepy Hollow. It's a great night to take photographs. And there will be a moon. Scary stuff!

Here's my Halloween photo hint for you should you embark on a mission to capture ghosts, ghouls, ectoplasmic radiation, and all manner of paranormal FREAKquencies: it's known as dragging the shutter. Using this technique I can almost guarantee you'll see ghosts!!!

When you want to catch the ambient light (or dark) a flash just won't do it - it will illuminate way too much of your subjects but the surrounding scene will be black obliterating any ghostly energy. The bright firing of the flash will likely scare away any demons too, which may be ok, but not if you want to photograph them.

Dragging the shutter lets you use the ambient light in a scene while using your flash to catch the moment and freeze the action. Its two two 2 shots in one.

Here's a real quick lesson:

Use your flash in TTL mode (metering through the lens).Whatever your shutter sync speed is for for a correct exposure, make it slower. So if it says 1/125, make it 1/10 for example if you're shooting in a dark place with just a little ambient light.

Your flash will automatically fire enough light for your subject but the slower shutter speed will also allow the ambient light to register on your sensor, giving your image the true spooky environment that you are experiencing. If your subject is a person or an animal, look closely at your resulting image on your monitor - see any ghosts? :-)

If you're a Nikon shooter with a DSLR and an SB600 or 800 you can set it up using Nikon's Slow Sync mode.

So, shooting scary stuff need not be a drag, it should be a drag.

Have fun trick or treating, drag your shutter, and don't forget to howl at that moon at midnight!

Random Ramblings

I'm so beat today - the Guardian Angle Project is officially complete and the Gala Benefit is on Monday. I am ready. I shot over 1000 images, processed them, created a (fabulous, if I do say so myself) slide show, and on Monday afternoon at the tech rehearsal, I will see it for the first time as it was designed to be. I so hope all the images look as good projected on giant screens as they do on my monitor!

I can't show you any pics of this right now but I will next week.

I also have to let you know that I'm now officially addicted to Craig Minelly, a WOW photographer from BC. I bought a CD of his Photoshop Actions at the PPOC MB Convention and I'm in love. I think after all these years of searching for the elusive perfect photo, the secret has been hidden away in a Photoshop Action file. Go figure. Check it out for yourself: Professional Photoshop Actions - Craig's Actions

And dear friend that's all I have the energy for today....

ciao for now...Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

A big hug and thanks to Judge Marlene Fast who gave me her ribbon at the PPOC Awards on Monday night.

Seems I have been Marlene's fav for the last few shows! We are so much on the same page that I may be going on that African Photo Safari after all! With all my new gear it will be a perfect time to put all my recent learning and practicing into effect. ...Victoria Falls at sunrise...Africa here I come...

And so cos I'm feeling rather pumped about everything this one's for YOU.

Time Bites, and then it doesn't

Happy Monday - a foggy and mysterious morning it is here. Today is also the final day of the PPOC Manitoba Print Salon and Convention. Can't believe the lack of time I had this time around - I just let thing s slide too far once again and was very rushed to find images that were worthy!

In some aspects I didn't do as well in the competition as I did last year - this I was expecting (I was runner up for Photographer of the Year). But this year one of my images was awarded "Excellence" which did not happen last year.

There were so many awesome photographs this year the competition was very tough! Finalists for Photographer of the Year all clearly deserve the honour. Now, if I am wise, I can learn from all their great talents and with the help of time craft my skills to emulate their greatness.

The big awards banquet is tonight when we find out who won what and who the esteemed photographer will be.

I'll get images and links up soon,

ciao for now.

Lake Manitoba Adventures - the Delta Weekend

The Delta Marsh Immersion Weekend came and went in a flash! Good thing today is a holiday, I have plenty of time to take a break. :-)

While the weather was not the greatest, it was not too bad. It was not very owl friendly thought, but the banding crew did manage to catch one little saw-whet for us and they were most accommodating in letting all the workshop participants have a turn at taking its photograph.

There were some astoundingly expert images created this weekend and I'll get some of them up here before the end of the week.

Once again I thank Heidi and Gordon for making the facilities available to us and for all their help in making the weekend a great success. It is for sure one of the best places to have an artistic type of event and I'm looking forward to more nature photography workshops with you in 2008.

The 2008 program schedule will be posted in November. Check back for more digital photo classes, dates, and field trips.

Keep on clicking!

On the Edge

I read a funny quote recently: "If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space!"

While I'm not sure that my environmental footprint is related to my life philosophy, this did get me thinking.

There are all sorts of these "life lessons" catchphrases - you know the kind - live each day as if it were your last, today is the first day of the rest of your life....

But most of them are cliches by now and most people I talk to don't even ignore them, they don't even notice them on the motivational posters or ads or whatever.

But living on the edge does have some appeal. We are told to think out of the box, get out of our comfort zones, to achieve anything we have to push our limits. But living on the edge, you're not inside nor outside the box, so like a turtle you can pop in or out as needed.

On the edge, there is enough fear factor to keep you alert and mindful, with just the right amount of adrenaline to keep you going, curious for more, compelling you to see the rest of the view. But there's also the option of pulling back "to safety" if things get too overwhelming.

I have committed to myself that from today onwards, each photograph that I make will only be made from the edge. No more safe shots.

I'll put my new approach to the test this weekend at the Delta Marsh Photo workshop and let you know what happened.

Still Crazy after all these Years?

My head wound seems to be healing up just fine (although some people would dispute that and say I'm even more crazy than I ever was! But...I'll save that one for another day.)

As Friday rolls around once again I CAN'T believe it's almost October. Can you? "It's crazy, I tells ya!" The Delta Marsh Immersion Weekend is all planned, all the participants are keyed up and ready for it. Hope the weather cooperates. Nothing more glorious than a warm autumn day along the beach, when you can feel the last few BTUs of heat from the sun as it strokes your skin.

But nasty weather does make the most interesting photos, however, it's not so good for outdoor instruction. And there's only so much one can do with ziplock bags and rubber wellies!

So what's the deal in your world as Autumn moves in? Are you inspired by the unreal colours? The subtle change in hue from one day to the next? The foggy mornings at dawn? Harvest Moons? What are your favorite subjects of fall? Got a favorite pic - send it to me.

As long as you're eyes are open to see, you're imagination will take you to crazy places. Winter spring summer OR fall.

Enjoy the weekend while it lasts, shine on you crazy diamond.

My head got ruined!

Sunday turned out to be a gorgeous day, full sun, hot and amazing with all the red and yellow leaves of autumn, making one last photo shoot for all of us with the urge to seize the day!

I headed out to photograph some old limestone ruins just north of my place, since I have wanted to explore this part of the province a lot more - so close to home and so scenic...

Now...I' am known for being a klutz - mostly I chalk it up to being left handed in a right handed world, but this was not my excuse today. Climbing up to the top of one of these derelict kilns, I crawled inside one of the open walls and proceeded to knock my head on an old ragged bit of metal that we jutting out of the wall.

At first I thought I'd just bumped into it, and that that stuff dripping down my forehead was sweat. But as I wiped my forehead with the back of my hand, I was petrified to see that what was pouring onto my face was blood.

It seems I'd left a chunk of scalp behind on the rusty metal rebar! yikes!

So much for my adventure. Back to the car, a wad of keenex clutched to my head, I packed it in for the day and wondered if I needed stitches, a tetanus shot, and how I was going to manage the haircut I have booked for Tuesday.

Oh well, now I know I'd look ok as a redhead!

Here are a few of the pics...

Infrared HOT is "in the can!"

With the last few days of heat dwindling rapidly behind us, and the looming darkness that is an infrared "black hole", it was hurry up and wait this weekend as we shot the first images for the Infrared HOT exhibit at the end of October.

But on Sunday, the weather was magnificent and the models were creative and my artistic director/talent manager, Rod Braun, got things going very smoothly.

I do believe we have some very "interesting" images for you from this shoot.

I'm calling them exotic abstracts rather than erotic as it may frighten some of the more fragile people out there in photo land! But while these images have as their base, the nude human form, you'll (probably) never guess it to see them.

Have I got your curiosity piqued yet? Do you want to see a sample? Hmmm, maybe I can get something up for you to take a peek at...But definitely come to the show in October to see what its all about.

Thanks to Rod, Natalie, Natasha and Geordy!

ciao for now

Finally it's Friday!

Golf. Although I seem to be surrounded by golfers I'm not among their ilk. However I'm golfing today - a client kindly invited me to a corporate golf tournament, one of those ones where you where you play for a charity. I'm sure it will be a blast!

But of course in my golf bag, I'll have my camera. I intend to make more photo shots than golf shots - what better way to expand the old stock photo library.

So if ever you need hi res photos of golfers (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) call me!

Wishing you a great weekend whether you've got a club in your hand, or a camera!

October is PhotoCrazy!

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm doing too much photo stuff right now!!! yep, you read right...

October is going to be busiest month yet for my photography pursuits, and here's why:

Delta Marsh Digital Photo Immersion Weekend
PPOC MB Provincial Convention & Image Salon
infraRED HOT exhibition at Fleet Gallery
Guardian Angels Gala for CancerCare Manitoba

And how much of all this do you think I have prepared?

But my focus (literally) is all over the place, so I need to knuckle under and get to work. I need motivation - anyone have any to spare (smile).

Summer leaves, Autumn leaves and Nikon Returns

Well, here we are again. Summer's on its way out and it's back to work, school, and business! And back to the fun stuff.

I don’t know how much you accomplished in these last few weeks but I didn’t get near enough done! Too many distractions; like Nikon’s announcement of the NEW Nikon D300 and...wait for it...a new full frame pro camera – the Nikon D3.

I have spent the last week scrounging the forums to find out all I could about these two cameras, and made up my mind to pre-order the D300.

I have the D2x and a D70 as my back up. I don’t need another 3 lb super camera. The D2x will be making unbelievable quality images for many years to come. And the D70 while still an amazing camera, is four years old - it’s time to move up to the newer technology embodied in these third generation DSLRs.

The shipping date is November – I won’t be able to do a thing till I get my hands on it!

You can get all the scoop on the tech specs and the usual second guessing of Nikon’s business plan on dpreview.com and nikonians.org. Two popular authorities are Ken Rockwell (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300.htm)

And Thom Hogan http://www.bythom.com/D3comments1.htm. Here’s a succinct summary from his site:

Nikon has essentially melded the feature list of the D200 and D3 into one new D200-sized body. This would be the Nikon D300 - and I need a smaller camera, since the D2x is such a beast – that’s why I’m already in love with the D300!!!!

Details of the Press Event: http://www.imaging-resource.com/NEWS/1187901361.html

Now, if only my fairy godmother would drop a few grand in my bank account...

Take your Photos Out for a Spin!

I’ve been mildly obsessed with panoramic images over the last couple of years.

When you see the Rockies from the peak of Cascade Mountain; or you’re standing in the heart of an old growth forest in Germany, you know that a “normal” photo just won’t do it! You really need to show your friends the BIG picture.

But there’s been another missing aspect to panoramas that’s confounded me too. The experience! Yes, the 360 degree view. You know – the breathtaking-ness of it all. The WOW! It may be ok to only have 6 degrees of separation, (or Kevin Bacon), but if you really want to share an experience, the immersive environment of VR panoramas is what you need.

I’ve spent countless hours in the last few months researching easy ways to do this. And in the past the technology was either expensive, or way to technical, even for a button monkey like me (!) and the results were always NOT worth the time you needed to invest to learn it all.

But I’m happy to now report that Virtual Reality (VR) panoramas are almost a snap to make with any DSLR and some open source (free) software.

Here’s an example of one of my road trips in BC this spring – the dreadful Keremeos Columns misadventure. Check out the size of the road – you probably won’t even recognize it as a road – I’ve seen animal tracks wider that this!!!

But you can see why it wasn’t a total waste of time – the view was captivating.

This pano took me about 30 minutes to make, and most of that was in organizing my images and JPG’ing them for the web.

We'll be learning exactly how to make these cool images at the Delta Marsh Digital Photo Weekend in October.

The Sky is Falling

I've always found it rather comforting that certain things in nature connect everyone. For example, I look at the Milky Way, and so do you but you are 1000 miles away. We are connected though, because we are seeing the same stars. Even though we are miles apart, we are sharing those light rays of the sun as they dance to us form deep in space.

I was thinking about all this when I was watching the Perseids meteor shower on August 12. In my lawnchair, reclined to see the "inverted bowl we call the sky" tripod and camera ready; shutter wide open for 35-45 seconds...This connectedness became quite fascinating to me.

The meteors were few and far between, so all I could do was ponder the awe that I felt staring this connected infinity directly in the eyes. But then it occurred to me that this connection only holds true if we're both in the same hemisphere.

I'm sure you know that just as we are guided by the North Star here in Canada, if you were in Australia you'd be looking at the Southern Cross. We would not be connected after all. This depressed me. My little theory, blown.

But just then a falling star DID shoot by me. and then another, and another. And my flimsy philosophies didn't matter any more, one by one they dropped out of my mind, with each meteor I saw. It was truly amazing to watch the sky falling.

Here's a few pics. Sorry about the size, it's the only way to see the stars.

Oh, and the silver streak? No, it's not a star, it's a plane.

Time Off?

So what do photographers do when they take a vacation? If we take a break from our cameras (and that's a BIG if), what do we do for fun and relaxation?

I'm not sure about you, (actually, I am sure {wink} ) but you probably don't build funky things for your website! But alas, I'm a confirmed Internet junkie and so, you'll see several new things here while I take my annual vacation from my retirement!

Pimp My Photo is a reality - check it out using the links on the left; my latest digital photography e-book will be launched mid September, as the last few chapters are completed; and a new look for nature photography is also in the works. Some vacation!

The last two weeks of August was always the prime holiday time for me when I was a corporate slave in the wonderful world of corporate communications & marketing; but now I look forward to it so I can DO work! To take some time to devote to my business rather than focusing on how I can help clients' business.

It's just a reversal or mindset - I fell like I'm retired 50 weeks of the year, but for these two weeks coming up - I get to work! And Loving it!

See the results here in September :-)

Powerless but not Helpless

Late on Thursday night a vicious summer storm ravaged its way through my neighbourhood. It uprooted trees, flung patio furniture deep into the woods, and downed powerlines.

I had no electricity for almost 24 hours. This happened last summer too, when my road received the brunt of the tail end of a tornado that a few miles north destroyed a campground and killed a woman.

So in a way, I was prepared for this lack of power (lots of candles, batteries, and good old fashioned books to read). But the coolest thing was working on my photos on my laptop by candle light, while listening to the news reports on my hand crank radio! I thought it was a masterful mix of old and new. And what I accomplished in 2 hours knowing that the laptop battery had only a limited "lifespan!" But I didn't have enough time to do all I wanted, so I'm a little behind this weekend.

But earlier this week I had also tested some very exciting new software (two new applications in fact) and wanted to show you some of the astounding things you can do with any digital camera AND one of these new applications - a Photoshop plug in.

I'll get to finishing this this week and will have some examples for you and also of the destruction of this storm...

Also, if you're a subscriber to my newsletter, be sure to read this edition for some big news. If you're not a subscriber, sign up today - its free.

See ya soon,

More stories and stuff

Here's a link to the new Chronicles Gallery - it's not so much a gallery but a collection of the images from various trips and image series. It's kinda like a blog with photos - not words. This particular set is from the Kootenay Chronicles from my adventure this past June.

Check this gallery out periodically. It will be updated regularly. SEE what's new in the nature photography world!

Let's Talk Trips

I've finally got all my images from my Kootenay trip ready for public consumption. I hope to have them up, along with the Chronicles themselves over the weekend.

As I had described before this BC adventure was not the most inspirational, but I did manage to get some funky shots, although I don't think any are competition-worthy. But I'll let you decide. I'll have a gallery and a link ready for you on Tuesday.

And talk about trips, I had the pleasure of shooting "HAIR - The Musical" - roaring back into the free love 60s! A student theatre troupe from my alma mater was performing this at our Fringe Festival. I know the director, and you know me, always inspired to help for a good cause. Pics coming soon.

But then these talented students will also be mounting a production at the University of Winnipeg Reunion this fall. And as an alumna of that fine ivory tower, my old gang and I will be there to raise he*l just as we did in the old days. It might not be exactly like the 60s, more like the 70s, but whose counting.

All I know is that there will be NO cameras allowed. (evil grins)

A late start to spring cleaning

For the last month I've been organizing all my excess stuff hoping to dejunk my life. It's much easier making a move without too many "accoutrements!"

Along with lots of not-too-exciting stuff, I am selling a brand new Sigma 70-300 4.5-5.5 APO lens.

I got it a month before my first ever PPOC Provincial Convention (2005 I think!). But at the convention I also won my first awards as a professional photographer. Between the great deals at the convention tradeshow, being Patty's assistant on wedding shoots using the 70-200 VR, and my own fondness for gadgets, I bought a new 70-200 VR as my treat to myself for winning.

So I quickly found I didn't ever use the poor 70-300. Here's the deal - it's an almost brand new - not a single mark of wear or tear, no dust, not even a finger print - 70-300 APO Digital Sigma lens. This is the more expensive one - not the one that retails for $150 or so.

Its also got a great macro capability for insects and flowers.

Here's a good review of this Sigma lens.

Here's a pic:

Make me an offer :-)

You can call me at my office 204.942.4704 if you need more information or want sample shots. Ideally I'd like to see it gone by the end of August if possible. I'll also list it on eBAY in 2 weeks.

Obsession

Besides being a classic designer perfume, what is an obsession?

Dictionary.com says it's "the domination of one's thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc."

Sounds kinda like being focused, motivated or goal oriented...but more often an obsession is taken to be a negative state.

I've been told that I'm obsessive about my pursuit of the perfect photograph. That I'm obsessed with "taking pictures." What's so negative about that? :-) I believe my dedication to trying to perfect my art has been paying off and I'm becoming a better photographer. Practice makes perfect, right?

It's not like I'm obsessive-compulsive. One defect at a time please!

So what is it about my love for photography that keeps me so enthralled, so OBSESSED? What is it about your obsession that keeps it so compelling - your love of art, music, golf, food, fill in the blank... How does that "high energy" state of mind come to be?

How does our passion for these things we love get started? And what is it about them that keeps that desire going? What is it that makes us passionate about our goals, pursuits and hobbies?

I believe it is true "inspiration." Dr. Wayne Dyer speaks of inspiration in a most uncommon way, and I have to agree with his interpretation. It's about energy. The literal meaning of the word is to "breathe in the spirit." Spirit being energy (remember Spirited Energy!!!) (Sorry that's an inside joke, just Google it to follow THAT story!)

Anyway, where was I? Obsessing about an obsession... Inspired, charged, electric. All energy, all inspiration. That's what moves me - when I take a great photograph (and I know right away that I have) it IS electric - I feel it. And think what I feel is the creative energy connecting with my consciousness.

And THAT is my obsession. Getting that connection. For me it just happens to happen through the lens of a camera. So maybe it's more of an "addiction" than an obsession. Whatever.

All I know is that it make me feels good :-).

Now, it's your turn. Make your self feel good - take your obsession and make a connection.

ZZZZZAAAAAAPPPPP!

HOT pics for cool kids!

The heat this weekend was fabulous! I spend 9 months of the year freezing in the snow, that when the temperatures hit the 30s I'm in heaven.

And I was also feeling quite creative. As well as getting ready for some renos on my house, I was cleaning up old files on my computer and decided to make you some desktop backgrounds.

This way I can share my inspirational sources and you can be inspired by them each day when you turn on your computer - a little bit of mother nature on your desk (top)!

Get your free nature desktop backgrounds and wallpapers here. If you're not quite a geek don't worry, these are easy to install. Instructions are also on the download page.

Wishing you a great Monday, and stay COOL (you always are: so cool!)

See the new Infrared Pics!

Raven Graves: Digital Infrared Photo Gallery

Last Updated: 07/8/2007 12:36:09

A grave situation - thus spoke the raven...

Hey, I'm back. Hope you didn't miss me!!!

Finally the summer is getting underway both climatically and photographically. I spent a few hours of solitude with my infrared camera last weekend in one of our city’s oldest cemeteries – where the elm trees are so old and so huge that they transform into a living cathedral, shrouding the ancient headstones with shade and shadow. It's quite a setting.

There’s a flock of ravens that makes the graveyard home and the entire time i was there shooting they were pestering me, as if to get me to leave. It was very Edgar Allen Poe-ish!

But it was great infrared shooting and I’ve just finished processing them so this evening I’ll put up a new galley and you can see for yourself.

Also don’t forget about the October photo retreat at Delta Marsh, at the U of M Field Station – the charming and rustic Mallard Lodge. Early registration is on now and spaces are limited, we have are half full already! Here’s are more details about the Delta Photography Retreat. If you have any questions, give me a call. Hope to see you there.

Oh, and here’s my latest – an infrared photo for a CD cover!

ciao for now,

Are you a morning lover?

Whether you’re a photographer or not, there’s nothing more inspiring than rolling out of bed just around dawn, in the summer, to get outdoors.

The colour of the light is otherworldly; all the wildlife is active reveling in the feast that is the morning. As I walk the Rottweiler through the mist covered meadow, with the pond offering steaming vapour trails to the pinkening sky, I know once more, rising early has its benefits.

Even with no camera, you will be inspired and invigorated to face the challenges of the day knowing you’ve seen what less than 1% of the North American population has experienced. It’s one occasion that Nature is at her best, guaranteed.

I have so many things going on these days, some bad, some good, that these morning walks are really mobile meditation for me. On the days that I feel inclined to “take” a picture from Mother Nature, I am almost always rewarded – her gift to me; and then things don’t seem so bad.

If you ever need clarity in your life, take a walk with a dog, at 6:00 am. It won’t take you long to become infused with the primal energy of nature –you’ll see what you need to see: and you’re emboldened to face the rest of your day.

Today think of this as my gift to you - some rain diamonds. (smile)

Next!

Well, I'm guessing since you didn't see fireworks, nothing much happened... (wink)

The good news is that it didn't rain but the bad news is there were so many people that I couldn't find a place to park. Shut out again!

So third strike and I'm out. Next inning coming up. Stay tuned :-)

Off the photo topic for a moment: Tonight, I'm off to see a private showing of Michael Moore's new movie Sicko. I'm really looking forward to this. July 1, Canada Day, just passed and as Canadians we do have an awful lot to be grateful for. I'm on pins and needles anticipating what Mr. Moore's take is on the state our health care system.

And then with several hot and sunny days in the forecast, I hope to get out and do some more infrared work this weekend. Oh, and finish the Mountain Epic Adventure shots too :-)

Tomorrow, I'll give you my critique of Sicko as well.

Batter up!

Another Long Weekend

Fireworks and festivities! A photographers dream - let's see how the weather holds out.

I'm planning on shooting the fireworks this weekend - the biggest show of the year, I believe. I had great success shooting fireworks with a film camera, but this will be my first attempt with digital.

I'm soooo looking forward to it.

We can compare the results next week.

here's a film version:

fireworks

Not too bad, if I do say so myself. Let's see if I can out shoot my self. :-)

Got some good Canada Day fireworks shots or 4th of July shots? Send 'em to me - I'll post the winners here!

Have a super long weekend. Whether on the golf course or in the bush with your camera, I hope all your shots are powerful ones!

ciao for now.

I went to the Ex and all I got was this lousy photo!

I'm even more depressed now than I was on Friday...I braved the angry storm skies and headed out for the hour long drive to the other side of the city where the Ex is held, (but the drive took one and a half hours because I ran into this little tornado on the way.)

Nature's light show was phenomenal. I have only ever seen lightning like that once before and that too was on a road trip. But I could only prop my camera up in the window because it was way too wet (and dangerous) to venture out of the car - which, at this point, was rocking back and forth like a cradle. I was sure I'd be in the throes of the tornado imminently.

Got a few ok shots in. (Set on Bulb at f7, I had to make several exposures and without a tripod keeping the D2x steady on the ledge of my car window was not the least of my challenges!)

After braving the hail, and the near zero visibility from the rain that began as soon as I'd started driving again, I made it to the Ex only to be told that they had shut it down because of the storm.

So now you can see why I only have one good photo to show for my adventure.

Here's the illustrated version of my mini road trip through hell....

Going down my road heading into the City

On the highway, (the light is lightning NOT the sun!)

And with as many as 35 cars pulled over to the side of the road, I kept going - the thought of fabulous nighttime images of colour and abstract-ism. Silly me.

And the scene when I arrived at the Ex = gates closed, masses of soggy wet mostly kids running for buses, or their parents cars; impatient security guards who looked at me like I was mental - "You want to do what!!!????" And more than a little mass confusion. And a two mile line up to get OUT of the parking lot :-(

So now Mother Nature has thrown cold water on my photo excursions for the last 6 weeks. Is this a sign? Of what?

I need better inspiration! I don't want to become an "ex photographer."

Go Long - Ex-tra daylight

Still on that time thing...today is the longest day of the year in this part of the world. Still sunny-ish at 10:00 pm. I took this pic just a few minutes ago when I braved the barrage of mosquitoes to see the sunset.

Today we will have about 15 hours of daylight. The sun rose at about 5:20 this morning and set at about 9:45.

But the bad news is winter is on it's way. I'm soooooo depressed.Oh well, there are still a few long days left. And good thing too. This weekend I'm photographing at the large local fair that happens here each summer - we call it the Ex.

I love the Ex! Especially at night. It's so cheesy, and (literally) the geeks and freaks love to be photographed which makes it a lot of fun. With my little 10.5 mm fisheye, those night shots are instant attention getters. As long as there are no evening thunderstorms, I'm sure there will be many opportunities to snap a few.

And the images from Great Western Clothes-less Chronicles will be up over the weekend to so you can finally see all cool shots of the mountains and the bears - so many of them, including a grizzly. And yes, I caught him on "film!" Despite my whining, there were a few sunny days so I got lots of IR shooting too.

So, have fun this weekend, see you at the freak show. :-)

Sweet Dreams & Time Machines

(OK, so James Taylor actually said “flying machines” but that doesn’t fit my story for today! Humor me :-) )

I talked to an old friend today. We hadn’t spoken for something like 20 years. It sure didn’t seem that long ago to me. But then, my ability to track time is pretty much nonexistent as most of my friends will tell you. Once I get into something, I seriously lose all sense of time.

But time is a strange construct, don’t you think? A voice, a photograph, even a smell, can whip you back into another lifetime in a heartbeat. It’s like time never existed.

I have a few other friends that I hardly ever see (stop laughing) – one lives in England. But when we do get together once a decade or so, it’s like no time has passed between us at all. We just pick up where we left off however many years ago it was. Time is also elastic it seems.

I think this is one of the reasons that we love our photographs so much. We talk of “the memories” but I think it’s really our need to seize time and stop it from running away on us. As long as you have a photograph, you have the time back. And of course you have that “moment” back too, but perhaps it has more with our need to control that which can’t be controlled?

Our photos are our instant replays.

I’m not sure if my friend wanted any instant replays or not, but it was lovely to catch up, even if our conversation was a result of the ultimate consequence of time.

Now, since 12 hours has passed before my eyes, I'd better get back to work on those photos I promised!!!

Heading Home

A strange trip indeed! Dark, brooding skies gave gloomy light; a strange and sad little pet cemetery tucked up away in the forest; little or no Internet connections (aack!!), missing clothes, a HUGE speck on my sensor; and plans that went awry at almost every turn.

It's like the universe was in a state of turmoil or unrest this week. Maybe it's an energy shift - I read about the magnetic poles of the earth and how they flip every million or so years. Maybe this is it...

All week the rain just kept on drizzling down - gloomy gloomy. But I'll take my cue from a great man, because these are all just minor inconveniences really:

"Be still, sad heart, and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary." -Longfellow

And if all goes well, I'll be home tomorrow and the sun will shine again :-). I'll show you my better pics from this adventure. We'll catch up some more then.

Last Updated: 06/07/2007 20:14:10

Rockin' in the Rockies!

It's turning out to be quite a trip!

That after a grueling 12 hour drive, I discovered I’d left my bag with all my clothes in it at home on the living room floor, the pace was set for my most recent mountain adventure. But with the first week behind me, all I can say today is that the next few days will only be better.

Week 1: Wet weather, over hyped scenic attractions, and no clothes. Sounds like the perfect trip, don’t you think?! I’m pretty low maintenance and very portable, so finding a place to re-oufit myself was no big deal. I was not a pretty sight to be sure, but then I always have the camera so there’s little for me to worry about :-).

When I make these photo trips, I set out a few objectives at the start – x number of stock photos in a defined set of concepts; or a series of fine art shots for prints or competition, and most recently, concept images for exhibitions and documentaries.

Well, rain in the mountains really limits the stock photo potential (except for a select few concepts, mostly negative and not usually good sellers); but rain and brooding skies can make excellent subjects for fine art and creative shots. So that’s what I’ve been “focusing” on. And wildlife - many bears and equally populous deer!

I’ll get the best ones up in a gallery page soon, so you can see what I mean...I was also inspired to write an article about shooting in bad weather and how to make spectacular photos through plastic bags! Look for this one soon.

More chat later, the sun is out now and that means time for some infrared shooting! See you soon.

Have a Happy Birthday!

Or at least not a poorly photographed one. I'll bet you didn't know that besides the Albuquerque Balloon Festival, birthdays are the most photographed events in North America. And it's getting worse.

At a recent milestone birthday lunch of a good friend whose longevity we should have been honouring, became the unwitting "star" of the show was the myriad of cell phone cameras that appeared even before the server had taken our order for drinks!.

These kitschy and ubiquitous devices seem to invade not only the spirit, but the space of most every human encounter these days. One of my friends who was clearly old enough to know better), whipped her camera out of her purse in a most dramatic way, and was madly snapping, while the rest of our group began chimping, like, well...chimps. Soon, they all had followed suit and long before the first course, the cell phone cameras had unfortunately stolen the show.

Now, obviously I'm all FOR photographs. Of just about anything. No let me correct that - anything. But there is without question a time and a place. Most people seem to follow the accepted convention and will politely ask subjects to "be in a picture." Or unobtrusively hover in the background for a perfect candid moment. But this decorum is eroding with each passing event.

Back in the day (uh oh, here we go...), there was one designated camera person whose job it was to get snap happy. While the guests enjoyed themselves, and the birthday boy or girl ate, drank and ripped wrapping.

But now - it's a veritable flash fest. And only because cell phone cameras are everywhere. And the photos are pretty much crap anyway. Not the scenes (much fun) but the quality is soooo very poor most of the time. And I also believe because of this so many people are missing the moment.

I should know. I'm the first one to grab my camera for just about anything. I "missed" most of Europe the first time I went because I was so intent on capturing every single thing I was awed by. That camera was glued to my face and all I (literally) was focused on was the photograph, not the entire experience. And as I have said many times before here (and elsewhere) sometimes it's better NOT to have the glass between you and the subject.

You really miss so much.

So if you want to have a happy and MEMORABLE birthday, tell your buds to hold of on the pics for at least a few minutes so you can enjoy the conversation, and they can enjoy you as you really are, not as a subject, looking like a deer in the headlights. Not that you do,

then relax and enjoy your day (click!)

It's almost the BIG Day!

Well, ok not so big, but the Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Awards Banquet is tomorrow night. And as a finalist, I'm supposed to prepare a speech, just in case! Ack. I'm so NOT prepared.

Where did the time go? I still have to find something to wear. Too late to shop now so I'll have to muster up all my creative energy and assemble something wicked from the back of that closet of mine :-) Goretex and Velvet, anyone?

I'm delighted that several clients will be there to take in the festivities, and if it happens that I don't win, at least I will still feel like a winner having them all there. Seriously, the people who entrust me with their work ARE the best.

And if you were thinking about sending your good vibes my way I do appreciate it but the winner has already been selected. And her identity is securely stored in a hermetically sealed envelope that not even Price Waterhouse can open till tomorrow.

But it can't hurt anyway - so vibe away! - if you're in a vibrating kind of mood. And as always, I'll let you know the results on Friday.

Rick and Elsa will always have Paris - I'll always have "Finalist!"

Here's looking at you, Kid!

Early, early, early & the start of the "May Long"

One more Angel to "shoot" this morning and then the summer officially begins. yipeee!

Yes, it's the famous "May Long" - contrary to popular belief, this holiday was not named in honour of some important Chinese citizen, but rather, an old, English queen. Victoria. (I adore her fashions, but her sense of humour left much to be desired!)

The May Long - in homage to old Viki, we in Canada, have three great days to adore nature more, and to be outside 4 walls to abosorb every molecule of spring air. It's so good. Most every Canuck will be in the woods in a tent or at "the Lake" this weekend. It's a fine tradition build on a suspect legacy - Victoria proclaimed "off with his head!" We proclaim, "off with the clothes!!!"

Since I have to get prepped mentally for this shoot right now,(just like every shoot), all I really wanted to do this morning is wish you a fun May Long weekend.

I'll be thinking of you while I enjoy a cool bevvy or two on my deck, camera in hand, capturing the spring lifeburst that's blossoming all around.

Happy clicking, hope your tent is waterproof :-)

Time - Flying

Did you have a super busy day yesterday?

I sure did. For the last few months I've been involved in a great project with the CancerCare Guardian Angels Benefit. This is an annual benefit and gala evening to raise awareness and funds for women's cancer.

My role involves photographing an amazing series of women who are currently battling cancer; and some who have already been successful in winning. We'll be using these images at the benefit in October, as part of the big presentation/theatre/perfomance.

I'm emotionally drained. It's touching, scary, rewarding, heart wrenching and inspirational. A few of these remarkable ladies are very young, and one is still in her teens. Some are older and have taken back their lives to live happily and healthy-ly for many years since their initial diagnosis.

I can't say too much more - other than my heart is breaking and dancing at the same time.

Ciao, and embrace every day you have...

The Good, the Bad, and the Aliens

It's Sunday evening and where I am, the sun is just about to plop below the trees - the horizon is not too far behind. And what a glorious weekend it's been. Warm weather, and not too many deadlines for work meant that I could finally get out and into my yard for the much needed spring cleaning. (the Good)

You wouldn't think that being in the middle of the bush there'd be much to spruce up (ha ha) but with a house in the middle of a forest, there are soooo many leaves, so much deadfall and just a lot of junk that accumulates over the winter. So rather than pack up my camera and head out the the "real" wilderness for sum fun, I forced myself to find the gloves, the rake and the broom, and get to work. (the Bad)

But being the attention challenged individual that I am, the work was interspersed with observations about the emerging spring, discoveries of new things in my garden and best of all the aliens! (the Aliens)

Before you close your browser in disgust, check them out. You'll see what I mean :-). The Aliens are among us - you probably have them in your own yard!

View the Aliens Among Us.

It's a bit creepy, don't you think!

In Search of ... my Contacts?

Last week I spent some time experimenting with the dedicated infrared converted Nikon D70. I was mostly disappointed - not enough stuff was growing yet. :-(

The rain this weekend will help no doubt. But I'm really waiting for the full bloom!!! Patience is NOT one of my virtues (ha ha).

Here are a few oddball IR shots from last week.

I also got quite a few calls and emails from long lost friends and colleagues last week after they'd read about my award in the FP. It was great to hear from every one of them. Even you Pat!!! :-) I feel quite neglectful that I have not been as diligent. This was a lesson for me.

We all get so wound up in the strands of minutiae that become our day-to-day lives, that it often becomes too complicated to maintain our friendships with those people we seldom see on a day-to-day basis. Their strands don't entwine with ours, so on we go slowly losing touch, quite literally. Before you know it's been years since you've talked! Even though that was never the plan - it just happens. I'm sure you know what I mean!

For me, it's always great to reconnect. And it's not just about maintaining your "contacts" ("contacts" demeans relationships, if you ask me! Contacts are what you put in your eyes, or those old prints we used to make from negatives!)

People come into our lives for a reason, and if they drift out and pop back in that happens for a reason too. Whether they arrive via newspaper article, e-mail, phone or a bumping-into, a gift has been exchanged. Be grateful and don't waste it.

I know I won't.

Full Moon Fever?

It's the week of the full moon - that MAY explain it. Huh???

All week I've had a TS Eliot poem going through my head. Remember the classic "Love Song of Alfred J Prufrock?"

Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherised upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question ...
Oh, do not ask, “What is it?”
Let us go and make our visit.

And I don't know why it popped in in the first place so I'm saying it must have been the moon! It's supposed to be responsible for lots of crazy things.

Well, at least its TS Eliot and not ee cummings. :-)

Jim DiVitale Speaks

Happy Monday! What a glorious weekend it was here on the prairies...Makes getting back to work much easier.

Ok, on to more important things: Contrary to what you may think, I’m really not an ego-driven narcissist! The PPOC national convention in April was not just about me, or even the competition for that matter!!! All our efforts in life should be to move us towards excellence, both in our own endeavours AND in sharing and giving back and making our world a better place.

And there was a lot of sharing at the Convention, and learning to be done. So let me share some of my newfound knowledge with you...

I was very fortunate to be able to take in the seminars of three great photographers, Jim DiVitale, Nick Vedros, and Miche Graf.

Today I’ll tell you a bit about Jim’s presentation. For those who don’t know Jim is an Atlanta based commercial photographer and one of the world’s premier Photoshop gurus. He’s on the Adobe beta test team – not the one you can sign up to be on at Adobe Labs, but the “real”, and photographs the Mizuno Sporting Goods product line (including golf clubs – coincidence?! - I think not). You can read more about Jim DiVitale here.

But one of the topics he expanded upon during his presentation at the Convention was some of the new functionality in Photoshop CS3. I’ve been a little vocal about the high price of this new version, but when Jim demo-ed one of these new features I was blown away. I don’t care now how much it costs – this one feature is worth every dollar the upgrade will suck from your wallet. But I can almost guarantee that you’ll make it back with one sale, using this feature.

What on earth can be so great you ask??? Remember how clunky the Panorama Tool (Photomerge) is in Photoshop PS2? The stitching is always a little off and if there were any changes in light or exposure as you shot there was little you could do to rectify the output to ensure a literally seamless image.

Jim showed us the NEW Panorama stitcher in Photoshop CS3 in action and it floored me. There is now no reason to buy an expensive panoramic head for your tripod, seriously.

Simply follow Jim’s instructions:

  • Set your white balance for whatever the scene is at the time – BUT DO NOT use AUTO.
  • Autofocus must also be off. Set to Manual Focus set at infinity.
  • Exposure set to manual
  • Use 1/3 overlap on all frames
  • The shot before your first shot should be of your left foot.
  • The shot after your last shot should be of your right foot.
  • This helps you determine where your pano starts and begins
  • .

Because once you try this the first time you’ll be addicted and you’ll end up with a whole card full of panoramas, not remembering which series is which! But look for the shots between your “feet” and you’ll know instantly.

The you use Photomerge just like you always have, but the internal processor with CS3 is much more intelligent and with these changes you will have a seamless and perfectly exposed panoramic image in seconds. One of the major enhancements is in the way the software cuts the overlap. In CS2 it applied a feather to the edge, then overlapped it. Which didn’t always produce the most satisfying result.

CS3 uses a hard edge cut and paste, and with the new processing algorithm, makes adjustments to exposure and colour on the fly.

I saw it emerge before my eyes and the crowd was mesmerized – you should have heard the applause!!

I don’t have any examples to show you yet. But this is the best article I’ve seen so far http://www.doubleexposure.com/Sammon_Panorama.shtml

Now, isn't that a great way to start off the week?

Another Friday Sunrise

I love Fridays. Especially in the summer. I plan my schedule so that I can get up extra early to catch the dawn, enjoy the deer as they feast on the emerging plants and the remnants of the sunflowers left over from the birds at the birdfeeder...And then I can get on with the more mundane tasks of the working day (sigh).

I am shooting this weekend, just not sure yet where I'll go. But with the pressures of creating those competition images, I need to so something just for fun! Plus I want to have some new examples for my workshops.

Yep, workshop season is starting SOON. The wild orchid field trips are scheduled for May (depending on when the flowers bloom), the Digital Infrared Workshop is June 22 and 23 at TecVoc, and the all natural all digital Delta Marsh Weekend Retreat is scheduled for October. REGISTER now. There's never enough room for everyone! And registrations are coming in fast.

And just for fun, if you're around tomorrow, check back here. I'll have something special for you. But it's only for the weekend - by Monday it will be gone...(suspense, eh!?)

Have a relaxing weekend, wherever you are. Catch ya later!

Added Attractions?

I've added a comment space on the winning image page so you can leave your comments. Check it out - see what the others are saying!

Also I have some "straight from the horse's mouth" info from Jim DiVitale the Photoshop guru, with some new super functionality he demonstrated at the PPOC Convention last week. Makes the cost of CS3 all worthwhile :-)

I'll get this info up right away.

ciao!

Finally, Friday!

This has by far been one of the longest weeks I've had in ages! Too many super early mornings (sans camera), and too many late nights. I'm sure not the party animal I used to be (haha)

My only commitment this weekend is to get my award winning photo here for you to see (and comment on), and to sleep...

Don't forget to sign up for my recently revamped newsletter - it's got more info, more tutorials, more about my techniques, experiments (and the odd bit of news about my crazy life and where it's going), and more photos. Did I mention more photos!? Get your copy of ViewFinder Nature Photography News here. Free as always!

Have a terrific weekend. :-)

Oops I did it again

Well, I had to take a second to post this. Last night I won the award for the Best Fine Art Photograph in the competition! I'm thrilled. Stunned! Shaking my head...

There were so many absolutely breathtaking images that it is a privilege just to have the opportunity to compete in the same arena.

And as a bonus, my image was also selected to be in the Loan Collection, a collection of the 40 Best Photographs in Canada, produced by professional photographers. Another big honour.

On the weekend when I catch my breath, I will post the image. I want to hear your comments about it. There was some lively discussion amongst the judges :-)

So thank you sincerely for sending your positive vibes my way - it worked.

catch ya later,

Print Salon Update

I'm soooooo tired! The PPOC National Convention is still on and goes till Wednesday, but the print Competition is all over for another year. The images were amazing - and getting to hear the judges' discussion and comments was even more enlightening.

Did you make it to see the winners? I didn't see you there... :-)

There's still time. They will hang on the second floor at the Fairmont till Monday at 3:00 I believe, and then all that's left is the awards banquet on Tuesday, the 17th.

While these numbers are all unofficial, there were about 800 entries from the best professional photographers in Canada, and my guess is less than half these images were accepted into the show; and when I last counted the winners, only 6 images were given Awards of Excellence.

Yes, one of them was mine!!!! Once the Awards have been given out on Tuesday at the Banquet I will post it here for sure.

It's so exciting to be in such esteemed company - knowing how tough the competition really is.

The best part is that there are more awards to be given out at the Tuesday Banquet - Photographer of the Year, Best Portrait, Best in each of the Classes, and the Loan Collection. (I think there are actually more than these... but I'm too tired to think straight...)

So whatever you're up to on Tuesday night, think about me and send your positive energy my way :-). I'd love to be among the trophy winners. There's nothing better than being a winner on the home team.

I'm grateful for just having the chance.

must get some sleep now...

Sounds like a cool winter festival but...

The IceJam! 100 Bands, rock and roll all night!!!

No, not really. It's a real ice jam. No fun at all. Just north of Winnipeg, in a town called Selkirk, an old bridge that spans the Red River, is blocking the flow of the ice pack northwards to the lake where it drains.

This is causing huge problems for the people who live in the town. Someone likened it to a backed up drain - the ice that gets piled up against that bridge and so does the water. It's all pushed back, flooding over the banks into homes and businesses.

Well of course I drove out to see what it all LOOKED like. Here's what I saw. And although the entire scene wan still and quiet, just the odd goose honking somewhere in the distance...

All of sudden the ground shook and there was an intense bang - like a gunshot. The ice was moving! For the first time in a week, and I saw it. No video camera though, but I shot a set of rapid-fire stills for you so you could see a bit of the effect.

See the Selkirk ice jam here.

Spring's going out with a bang!!!!Yeah baby!

What happened to Spring?

Wanna escape this endless winter with me? Summer looked so promising a week ago...

Oh well, Jumpin' Jimmy Jackrabbit or whatever the Easter Bunny is called these days is likely still hibernating, and even the pussy willows are clamped tightly closed. What spring symbols are there to photograph on the only four day long weekend of my year?

I'm not worried - I always find something. ha ha

But if you can't get away, here's something for you to do. As the newly minted chair of the Publicity and Outreach Committee of the PPOC Manitoba Board, consider this your personal invitation to come and watch the judging at the PPOC National Print Salon. If you're in Winnipeg next Thursday and Friday (April 12 and 13 respectively)please come. It goes on all day, and all the next day too! All at the Fairmont Hotel, at the famous corner of Portage and Main (40 below - Neil Young's favorite place).

If you want to see some kick a*s photography you've gotta see this exhibit.

If you thought Karsh was great, you can see some of his "competitors" here from all across Canada, along with up and coming new photographer stars. If portraits aren't your thing, there are plenty of nature, industrial, fine art and commercial images too.

Yes, there are lots of Wedding photos but the commercial and nature stuff is judged separately. Friday I believe.

There will also be a showing of the winners. If suspence is not your thing, the winning images hang all weekend long so after your shopping is over on Saturday, be sure to drop in and see how your hometown photographers did against the rest.

I've submitted my best four. I'll be anxiously waiting the news at Hy's!!!!They'll be posted here as soon as they have been scored. Then you can be the judge!

hop hop hoppy easter....

What a Joke!

April Fool's Day, I mean. I won't pull any stunts on you - I value the time you spend here. :-) But I do think it's very odd idea that once a year you get to pull a fast one on your friends. Is that anyway to treat your loyal buddies?

If you did participate, I hope it was a creative and original joke you came up with. The big news outlets always seem to have good ones (Globe & Mail, Washington Post etc.). They announce the discovery of a young Guatemalan kid who lives in a peasant village high in the mountains of Central America, with no formal schooling, has discovered table top fusion. Does it daily to amuse his friends...

Now that's a good joke!

Mother Nature, as always played, a good joke on me. By yesterday afternoon (Saturday) most of the snow was gone and I was supposed to be in Brandon for a camera club presentation on Sunday. No worries. But this time nature didn't cooperate and dumped 4 inches of wet snow overnight. There was no way I wanted to make a 3 hour drive in uncertain weather conditions. Now I feel like such a wimp. :-(

But I've made that trip before and it covers the WORST bit of highway in western Canada, and in snowstorms it's nothing less than treacherous. So I stayed at home and go caught up on other stuff.

Such is April in Manitoba - what a joke!!!

Hope your weekend was no laughing matter.

Ciao...

More flavours than Baskin Robbins?

For those of you with deep pockets, Adobe has launched it's "pre-order" phase for the new Photoshop CS3 family of software.

And they have also announced that there are 2 "flavors" of Photoshop CS3. They are both deep pockets versions given that the cost for the full, non-upgrade package is almost $2000!!!! Yes that's three zeros! yikes.

For that kind of cash, I'd better get chocolate chips and 3 scoops...wow...seeing that on Adobe's page was a bigger shock than watching the crazed border collier lunge at me (gotta get one of those $99 video cameras and post these escapades on Youtube or something. Get the SCOOP on the NEW CS3 at Adobe's site

In the meantime, I'm using plain old CS2 to edit the golf club shots. I'll be finishing them all of tomorrow and Saturday. I've never looked at golf clubs as an artistic object or creative shape before this week, but now my brain is infused with ideas and inspiration.

Highly reflective metal is one of the most difficult things to shoot at the best of times, but golf clubs have to be shot in a certain way, blacks have to be black, and chrome has to be white. Try shooting your own irons and see how hard it is to have NO reflections anywhere - just white. It's not as easy as it sounds.

I may not be able to post the final golf images here, but I'll give you the link to the client's site when it's all done so you can see them there. And maybe you'll buy some clubs? (wink)

If there's anything generic I'll give you a sneak preview tomorrow afternoon (heehee). Now, back to the studio for that 3 wood....

Sneak Attack

This morning I was attacked by my neighbour's deranged border collies. I was taking my well behaved and obedience-trained Rottweiler for his early morning walk, totally absorbed in the breaking dawn and warmth of this new spring day. I think my dog was too. He never heard them coming.

In our oblivion, the two of them snuck (is this a word!!??)upon us from behind, when my dog turned just in time to save his rear end from being border collie breakfast!!! Good thing he has no tail. The other dog was foaming and baring his teeth and looked very nasty indeed. This was the equivalent of the proverbial sucker punch - unprovoked and uncalled for.

These two monster dogs have been tormenting our neighbourhood and anything that moves, from kids on their bikes, to other dog owners and their mutts, but now it seems they have make the leap into angry and aggressive beasts.

I'm usually prepared for bears, and I've seen quite a few in my years out here, none of them were as crazed as these neighbour dogs. Buzz and I both survived this attack with nothing more than racing hearts and a cold sweat.

But tomorrow I'll be armed with bear spray, and my camera of course! Probably I'll take the d70 and the 70-200 VR lens. If I get a good shot of those teeth the Animal Control guy is going to get a call from me...right after the shot of pepper spray.

And how was your weekend :-)

Getting Ahead of my Game?

Nature photography as a technical pursuit is, to me anyway, a fairly uncomplicated endeavor. It's just you, your camera and whatever light Mother Nature happens to have on offer at the time. Its kind of like meditation - tranquil, peaceful and often thought provoking.

Studio photography, on the other hand, is a complicated mass of lights, reflectors, modifiers and techniques. It's all business, and if you're lucky a little fun!

I've done lots of product photography for people's business catalogues, but mostly small objects that are easy to light and that always have the wow factor once I'm done . :-)

But this week, along with all the other deadlines on my plate, I was asked to shoot a new line of golf clubs for the clients' seasonal catalogue and website.

Now, I've swung a club or two, mostly at fund raising events and the annual company golf day when I was working in the corporate world, but would hardly call my self a golfer. So the opportunity to shoot golf clubs is more of a challenge in dealing with all those studio factors.

I mentioned this shoot to a few friends (I'm surrounded by rabid golfers!!!)and they are all all of a sudden, voluneteering to be my assistants while I photograph these clubs.

Am I missing something? Are the new seasons' clubs like new cars? Or cameras :-).

Why is golf such a hot sport? I'm sure I will find out.

Have a great weekend, see you on Monday.

Overload!

I'm getting ready to submit my images for the National Print Salon in April. My desk is a mess! CDs and DVDs everywhere. I still haven't decided on which to submit. It's not like I have a lot of possibilities - these conventions are very strict in what's considered a good photograph. So even though I have tons of photos, very few are suitable for a national competition.

And I have to live up to my last year's track record - Best in Class, and had an image selected for the National Loan Collection! That will be tough to beat this year. Pressure's on!

I'm also working on a presentation for the Manitoba Camera Club in Tuesday night, AND another for the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday. Why do I do this to myself....

Oh well. It's all for a good cause.

I had a sheet listing the criteria for judging you photos and with all my clutter I can't find it now. I wanted to share with you the various elements that define a good photograph. Not just for a competition, but in assessing everyday images that you may want to enlarge, sell or use in postcards, posters etc.

Well, once these presentations are over, I know I'll find it and I'll get it up here for you.

Gotta get back to work - the midnight oil is almost gone.

About that Secret of Mine...

Yes, my secret is The Secret. Huh? You may not have heard of this inspirational documentary before. I first heard of it about a year ago and eventually got the DVD last summer. I didn't tell many people about it because it's on the edge for a lot of people, in a lot of ways. But then these are the folks who should be learning from it most. :-)

It's really about a counter intuitive way to understand the world, but it mixes in some quantuum physics to explain how our knowledge about the universe has changed from even 30 years ago and how this same energy influences our lives. If you know how to harness this energy, you can do, become, get whatever you want.

This film has been discussed at length on Larry King Live, and once he got to it well, you know Oprah had to get in on it too! So it's practically a mainstream movie now. I have some friends in Calgary and they regularly have Secret parties, discussion groups the whole bit! I wouldn't go quite that far but...

...if you need to inspire yourself to reach your creative pinnacle, or if you're working with others to help them achieve all their potential, or if you're volunteering in your community with those less fortunate than we are, you really must see The Secret and share it with them. It will make you feel great, and it is when you feel, that you can create.

There's also a book version of The Secret out now as well.

AND if you really want to be inspired; want to inspire others; or if there have been a few nagging things missing from your life lately that you'd really like to fix, one of the stars of The Secret is on a speaking tour.

She'll be in my home town of Winnipeg in April, take your friends, take your staff, you've got to see her. Lisa Nichols as a dynamite motivational speaker.

So, now you know my Secret!!

later...

Dawn of the Dead

The sun is rising way earlier now AND it's getting warmer. It's time. Time for another rural photo shoot this weekend to catch the "spring". Maybe I'll head back to Zombieville for for Sunday brunch and hopefully catch a glimpse of those "zombie children" before heading into the bush.

Depending on the weather conditions, I might also be lucky enough to capture mist on the Brokenhead River as it thaws. Scientists call this time of year (well not exactly THIS time, but the time when the thaw actually starts, and the week or so it takes to melt) the spring freshette. Sounds pretty don't you think?

And it CAN be beautiful. The air is still cool, if not cold, but the sun's rays are warm so there's lots of melting and lots of moisture in the air. Things start to come back to life (much like the zombies!), only much more attractive. And if you remember back to science class, cold air can't hold much moisture, so we get fog, mist or dew (if the air temperature is above freezing). All make for great images.

If you live in a winter climate, be sure to check your long range forecast and as soon as there is a decisive shift in temperature from below freezing to above, you are almost guaranteed a great photograph of the freshette if you get up in time for the sunrise. You've probably got several days to give it a try.

So get out! - you've probably never heard of the spring freshette before, and if you haven't you also haven't experienced it.

gotta grab another cup of coffee...

A Special Request

You know that I love the Delta Marsh Field Station where I hold our annual nature photo fest. Well, The Delta Marsh Field Station (U of M) is holding for the first time, a special annual fundraising dinner. They want to ensure that the facility can continue to improve, support and keep up with the needs of students and researchers and photographers! They celebrated the 40th Anniversary this year. This event will be held at the William Glebsy Centre in Portage la Prairie on Thursday, 19 April, 2007.

Please consider attending the dinner to support the cause. It's only $40.00. I'll be bringing a contingent of nature photographers to raise a ruckus. :-) As well I'll be donating a limited edition fine art print for the auction.

Contact Heidi at Delta hdenhaanATcc.umanitoba.ca (replace at AT with the @ symbol)Phone: (204) 857-8637

I'd love to see you there.

A Lesson for History...?

Jim was great. His poetry always made me weep. But the closest I ever got to him was Paris. And he was already dead.

Van, on the other hand, was very much alive this week, and I was just 28 rows away. What a show it was. One of the best concerts that I have been to. Ever.

My very famous (and very distant?) "relatives" of the Morrison clan are a truly talented, if not petulant, bunch. But alas, I have photos of none of them. I purposely stayed away from Jim Morrison's grave when I was in Paris - too depressing. Security at the Van Morrison show this week would have confiscated my D2x.

And it's probably a good thing I didn't try to sneak it in anyway. Experiencing an event from behind your lens is rather like watching it on TV - there IS a physical and mental barrier between you and the real experience. It's like you are not really "in the moment." As a photographer you are always looking for the shot, not taking in the entire event, with all the sensory overload that comes with it.

So even though I've said this before, it should be repeated. Sometimes it's just better to leave your camera behind so you can experience it ALL!

I'm not ignoring you, really!

It just that this has been a super busy week and it's only Tuesday!!!A board meeting yesterday, another one tomorrow, after a dinner with my pals, and the submission for Woman Entrepreneur of the Year is due next week. Seeing my long lost cousin Van Morrison in concert on Thursday - all in parallel to the day to day work.

I'm not complaining. I just have lots of news but no time to get it out.

The major stuff: Dates confirmed for the Digital Infrared Photography Workshop: JUNE 22 and 23rd, 2007. Details and how to register . Do it now.

If you're a Camera Club member you'll be getting a preview at my presentation there. :-)

The Secret? Oh yeah. It's coming. Actually it's already here...

What else? Offthepagephotography rocks. Talk to Patty first before you visit any other wedding photographer. Seriously.

ciao for now.

Snow Man!

Yesterday in between blizzards, we got out and got our snow sculpture shots. This one is on the corner of Broadway and Main Street, in downtown Winnipeg.

My Big Secret

I'll be telling you about it soon :-)

Last Updated: 02/17/2007 14:45:55

It's SNOW Cool!

We have a winter festival here in Winnipeg. One of the more ambitious endeavors to spring from this week long beer-fest are snow sculptures.

These works of art are huge and adorn major intersections and highly visible areas across the city. Normally due to a quirk of nature, the week of the fesitval also corresponds to a week of intense and unusual warmth so invariably by the time the festival is well underway, the sculptures have decomposed into ugly lumps of ice and road salt.

But I just got an interesting little assignment - to photograph this years' roster of snow sculptures. And thankfully the minus 40 temps have moved off, although the cold snap did preserve the snow art very nicely for once, perfect for fine art photos.

Snow, as most experienced photographers know is actually fairly difficult subject matter as the camera renders white into a boringly dull 18% grey. So you have to over expose your shots to get white to look white. But for these sculptured, I'll also need to capture texture and shadows to highlight the definition of the shapes and forms.

It will be a challenging and fun project. So I'll be out and about this week, clicking away at these packed snow monoliths.

Let's see what develops...

Yep, it's Valentines Day, but I won't bore you with cheesy sentiment. Theres way too much of THAT in the world already.

However, there is not enough chocolate!

So I'll just wish you a great day (like any other)!

Send me a free e-card if you can't send me chocolate!

Send one to anyone you like (or don't like).

What does Minus 40 Degrees Look Like?

Last week the temperature hit -40 C for more than several hours. For those of you still on the Fahrenheit scale that's also -40!

It's COLD!

On that fragile morning as I was on my way to work, I decided to brave the fridgidity for a few moments to "enjoy" a strange sunrise.

When it's that cold, the air is do dense it can't hold much moisture at all, so whatever water vapour was in the air that morning, "evaporated" (sublimated?) as fog and the delicate dawn unrolled before my eyes!

A thick but somehow lacey fog threaded it's way right into the city where it intertwined with exhaust fog from traffic and buildings to create an eerie environment straight from a science fiction movie.

Zombies Rule in Garson!!!

Last Sunday, I drove out to the tiny town of Garson, Manitoba just north of where I live, for sunday brunch. (There's a funky little restaurant there that serves the BEST brunches!!!)

Anyway, it was one of the rare occasions that I didn't have my camera with me, and when I was leaving the restaurant of course I saw something that needed a photo. All I had with me was my cellphone camera, so the image quality is mostly non existant!

But I thought it was pretty funny so I did my best but next time I go for brunch there I WILL bring a real camera and get a better shot.

This sign is hilarious - there a drawing of a dead kid under the headline! How gruesome is that!? How many dead kids do they have in this town that we are supposed to watch for.

Very creepy indeed!

An Entrepreneur for a New Age

For an unassuming and very low key guy (his words) this entrepreneurial mastermind is dynamite! We had a lunch date this afternoon, and I was astounded by the scope and breadth of his business "empire." Way more extensive than I had thought, it spans several continents and more than a couple SIC codes!!!

But what I learned is it's not the big ideas that make or break a business, it's the little ones. And while thinking big is probably a requirement to being big, it's really just about that old "lateral thinking" approach. It's a cliche now to speak of this - thinking outside the box - but often the unthnkable, the ludicrous idea is the one that will make it.

We all seem to be programmed to analyze why something WON'T WORK, rather than to explore ways to make it work.

Harnessing the power the Internet gives a business is a key component in all Daren's businesses, past, present and future. Which has given me 1000 new ideas - look out!

We are meeting again next month, for another mastermind session!

...and loving it!!!

Is it just a coincidence that you're here?

Several years ago a friend gave me a copy of Deepak Chopra’s best seller, “The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire.” It’s subtitled Harnessing the Infinite Power of Coincidence. It’s a fascinating look at some alternate ideas about how life “works.”

In the book Deepak explains that “every coincidence is a message, a clue about a particular facet of our lives that requires attention.”

He talks about uncanny occurrences, like stumbling upon an old photograph of someone you haven’t seen in many years, then you see them in some unlikely place at some unlikely time. Or you get a call from them “out of the blue.” You know the kinds of events I’m talking about?

Most people would call these events “coincidence” – meaning a random event that occurs by chance in a chaotic world. But the word “coincidence” simply means “at the same time.”

Going a step further, Deepak explains that there are no RANDOM coincidences – rather we have created these “same time events” through our thoughts, actions and desires. Subconsciously usually, (but for some, consciously - thus the reason for his book), our desires have connected us to a power he calls “synchrodestinity.”

So did we co-create our coincidence? For what reason? Were we in the same place at the same time because we are thinking the same things at the same time? Being the whacked out nature freak I am, I’d say yes. But you could certainly say no, ignore it and pass it off as a purely random happening and forget about it.

But if we DO accept that coincidences are “on purpose”, Deepak urges us to act on them, go with the flow (it’s all energy after all!) - something extraordinary always awaits as a result. It's nature's way of sending us a message we need to hear. He tells us those “gut feelings” and “little voices” are encouraging us to uncover the genuine dynamism of the universe.

You’ll have to read Deepak's book about Coincidences for yourself to get all the details – I wouldn’t even try to explain or paraphrase the explanation any more than I have clumsily done here. But that “coincidence” is trying to tell you and me something...

Gotta go, the phone is ringing. Maybe it’s my coincidence calling!

Good things come to those who wait...

Sigh...there was a slight change of plans for my millionaire mastermind lunch date. Like all successful people he's much in demand and so we had to reschedule our (my) enlightenment.

But we have a new date now for early next week. Do you think it would be presumptuous if I brought along my new business plan?

"What you believe, you will achieve!"

Any kind of success, whether creative or otherwise stems from your BELIEF in your ability to make it happen. If you believe you can, you will. The old defeatist attitude is a prime example of this in reverse. And we've all talked about the equally ubiquitous "self-fulfilling prophesy," so consciously or not we are aware of this principle.

Clearly, success has more to do with your "inner game" and your acts, than with your talent or skill. Over the years many famous coaches, psychologists, trainers and millionaires have reiterated this same concept.

So what does a successful inner game look like? What habits, manerisms, beliefs, and acts does a hugely succesful person possess?

Tomorrw (Wednesday) I will find out. I'm having lunch with one of the most creative "millionaire minds" of our time; a man who redefined the term "entrepreneur" for the 21 century; a visionary, for sure, and one with ethics and a social conscious.

If you know a creative genius, (or maybe you are one yourself,) I want to hear from you. What lurks in a "millionaire mind?"

What do they DO to stay creative, to keep focused, what are their most effective mannerisms for staying at the TOP of their inner game? What do YOU do?

I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow :-)

CIBC VISA Comes to their senses!

Last year (December 2006) I got embroiled in a totally distressing situation with CIBC Visa over an online fraud using my credit card number.

While the merchant agreed they'd made a mistake in shipping the items to an address 2000 miles away from me, and seemd to be trying to recify things, CIBC Visa refused to do anything but quote platitudes, "guidelines" and the mumbo-jumbo on back of my statement. Even afer escalating the case to some public avoider emboldened with the glorious title of "Director of Customer Support", I only received a form letter from him quoting the same platitudes, guidelines and mumbo-jumbo.

I composed a well thought through reply to the Director, slept on it for a few days, added a few choice adjectives and mailed it off.

To my infinite surprise, I got a call this evening from CIBC Visa, wanting to kiss and make up! I asked what had initiated their change in attitude since this debacle had been dragging on for months, the agent didn't really know but said he'd "been made aware" of the case, and had been instructed to take care of it. Nice.

So, while I've yet to see the charges reversed, it seems a fix is in the works. FINALLY!!!

Tomorrow I will call the merchant to see if they had a hand in it or if it was my very eloquent flame letter that did the trick!

So for now, I recant - CIBC Visa sucks not so much. Let's see if they are as good as their word. When my account is credited of the bogus charges and my new card is delivered to the branch for me to pick up, I may feel a lot better!

More about the "infraREDHOT" Exhibit

Ok, so not everyone reads the old blog articles...not a problem. You want more info on my infrared photo show in October.

Simply, it's erotic abstracts in infrared. (I need to keep some mystery in it so you'll come to the show and see it for yourself!)

I wouldn't even contemplate such a show, if I didn't have a consistently superb camera to capture the models. There's nothing worse for a model than retakes: holding a pose for an infinity while the slow poke photog makes adjustments to the camera; or having to "hold still" when the expposure is being made.

To make it effortless for everyone, I'll be using my converted Nikon D70 for the shoot, because it's the only way to take handheld infrared quickly and accurately, using the camera's built-in light meter to set the exposure. No tripods and opaque filters on this set!

The shoot involves a nude couple (this time it will be one male and one female) all in glorious and mysterious infrared, outdoors under the summer sun. So you can see why speed and efficiency are crucial.

And speed and efficiency are VERY big concerns when your naked AND outdoors!!!!

That's about all I can tell you for the moment. We're working on some promo stuff and YOU KNOW it will be posted here when it's done. But for now mark the date and plan on being there.

NEWS FLASH

The dates for the InfraRED-HOT exhibition are October 22, 2007 - November 2, 2007 at Fleet Galleries, 65 Albert Street in Winnipeg, Canada. The Opening will be on the 22nd by invitation only. Contact me to get yours. There are a limited number available.

Posters go up in February to capitalize on the "romance theme" and erotic imagery that Februray conjures up.

I'd love to see you there in October and to get your feedback on what will be a highly "charged" exhibit. Are your spidey senses tingling?!

Astonishing Customer Support from Alien Bees!

Back in December I purchsed a new Alien Bees Ringflash AB800. It is an innovatinve new design and probably a masterpiece of engineering (not ever having used a studio ring flash, before I can't be sure, however it to me is a mecahnical marvel!)

I did have a few problems with it though. A bit of dumb design was related to where the power cord plugs into the unit itself - on the bottom of the big ring housing. And you know how big the head of your computer power cord is, well, this is the same plug as your computer. It's big, and then the cord has to extend out of the plug head and down to the floor to be plugged into the wall outlet.

However, using a Nikon D2x mounted on the ring flash creates two problems. To get the lens into the "donut hole" of the flash unit, you must slide the camera forward towards the flash housing as far as it will go so the lens is fully within the housing, to avoid vignetting. BUT the battery compartment of the camera butts right up against the power cord preventing the lens from being fully inside the hole.

So you are limited as to what lenses you can use with the D2x. And it's cumbersome as heck to try to remove that cord, without first removing the camera.

Number 2 problem: the handle feels quite skimpy and not strong enough to support the D2x. The handle feels like it's being twisted.

So much to my huge delight and surprise, I got an e-mail from Alien Bees letting me know that the housing, the handle, some gels and a diffuser and a few other accessories were part of a free upgrade to rectify the design flaws in the original shipments. WOW a FREE UPGRADE!?

But as I continued reading my heart sank...this was only for US customers. Us "foreigners" could get all the parts for free, but we'd have to magically turn into electrical engineers so we could make the alterations on our own. Oh well, better than nothing... I was still happy.

THEN, I received yet another e-mail frm Alien Bees letting all us Canuks know that they had made arrangements for a Canadian firm to do all the upgrades for a very reasonable nominal fee that included the return shipping costs!!!! I'm Ecstatic

Please don't think I'm ungrateful for saying this but it's either the most brilliant marketing tactic since "new coke," or Paul Buff is one of the last few honourable business people on the planet!

Alien Bees Rock!!! Paul Buff is a god!!!

Photos to go!

A DVD of about 70 images just got accepted (yay!) to the stock photo agency I mentioned in November, so I'll be busy keywording them all. I now have a great new assistant who I'll be training to do this, but I managed to get quite a few done already.

The keywording is so important because this is how image buyers find the images they are looking for. Images from my previous submission didn't seem to be showing up when I tried to find them. Apparently my choice of keywords was all wrong.

I then spent some time reviewing other photographers' images on that site to see how they did it, but I realized then the majority of these images seemed to be travel related. BINGO! The light went on - I put the keywording on hold for a few hours - because I have a lot of travel images too.

I went through my old 35mm slide carousels and rediscovered quite a few suitable slides to submit to this agency. Forget the parties, it's the ski trips, beaches, mountains and European vacations that seem to sell!!

I've been pretty lucky over the years because I've been able to travel to many wild (and not so wild) places, even Luxembourg - that hotbed of tourist activity!

Whether it was with one of my past jobs, or just for fun, my adventures have enabled to to develop quite a collection of travel photography.

The agency I'm with is Alamy and they are based in Europe, so European images are big sellers, but they also recognise they have a bit of a shortage of North American images. Great for me, and YOU!

If you're a photographer in North America and have a lot of travel and vacation images, consider submitting some test images to Alamy - they pay way more than iStock and do not edit subject matter. If you get accepted it's very easy to build up a sizeable collection there.

You can see my images (a lot more will be appearing in the next days as I finish the keywording process!) here at Alamy's Stock Photo Page

These are not all nature images, it's more like my vacation album! But image buyers want this stuff, and if we as photographers can provide it and get paid for it, it can provide a nice second income.

Plus it gives me one more reason to hit the road!

I wanna be bugged

This blog is a bit unlike the regular blogs where you can add and post your comments (the hosting company I use is changing this - soon I hope).

But don't forget that I do want to hear from you - whatever's on your mind. Got a question; need more information on a specific topic; have an opinion; frustrated; just want to say "hi"; or want to share an amazing photo or experience?

BUG ME! One click is all it takes to rattle my chain!

Talk back!

Who me? Possibly. I just found out I've been nominated. I'm totally blown away cos I don't know even who did the nominating!

Nothing better than a good mystery, on all counts...

The announcement of the winner will be made in May 2007 at an Awards Ceremony at the Convention Centre, - I'll keep you posted.

Another fresh set of 365 days!

Isn't it great the way that works - we get a clean slate once every 365 days. Over three hundred chances to make that dropdead photo! How will you cash in on all your opportunity in 2007?

On my list of new year's "revolutions" I'm preparing for the national Professional Photographers of Canada Convention being held here in April; organizing the photography course at SITE Studios starting next week (yikes!); launching our new pet photography service and Website; and working on fixing up this site. Its getting a little messy don't you think?!

And for something completely different, audio blogging. Coming soon so you can listen to me babble on!
