Our approach
It's all about YOU! We've constructed our digital photography instruction for small groups. My team and I work one on one with each of you, regardless of your skills or equipment. From experience I know that people absorb ideas the best in highly interactive, hands-on, and mostly "in the field" situations. So this weekend will take place in an informal, collegial and friendly atmosphere where your input and collaboration is encouraged. All interactive all the time! So you can be sure you'll learn what you need. See the October 2005 Weekend in pictures here. Digital Photography Instruction in Action!
Since the computer is now your Darkroom, you'll have lots of computer time in the state-of-the-art lab, to put into practice the post-production techniques so critical to the realm of digital photography, and to explore and discover your "inner artist".
You'll learn how to not rely on your eyes or on what you see through your viewfinder. You'll learn the secrets of simplicity.
You'll learn to be more confident with your digital camera and your photographic skill. This digital photography workshop will help you "see" all the different perspectives and options in Nature. By learning about your subjects, you can capture those hidden qualities and avoid the dreaded photographic clichés!
The art of seeing and knowing your subject before setting out to photograph it can be the difference between a snapshot and a breathtaking image. Proper digital photography instruction involves more than just the technical and by becoming immersed, you will start to FEEL your images!
Should you consider registering?
It doesn't matter what kind of photographic equipment or skill level you have, it's not the camera but the eye and the brain behind it that makes the difference. I've had people remark to me “Wow! What a great photograph. You must have an expensive camera! Little did they know that the image was taken with a cheap point & shoot camera. In fact many of the images that I made for my portfolio submission to professional photography associations were made with a point & shoot digital cameras, or a 20 year old 35 mm film camera.
Having said all that though, you should be familiar with how your digital camera operates, and it would be a huge advantage for you to bring a tripod, and your digital camera User Manual.
Regardless of your camera equipment, you'll learn how to use it better, how to maximize its features, and how to avoid the marketing hype of camera equipment manufacturers. So get immersed. Relax in the historic and rustic lodge, marvel at the most brilliant sunsets on the Prairies, capture the Milky Way, all on the shores of an ancient and mystical lake, relish in the ephemeral prairie light, flora and fauna in this ecologically significant place.
As an added bonus, we've timed these photography lessons to coincide with major nature research activities at the Field Station - at the May workshops part of our digital photography instruction will focus on photographing songbirds, right up close, during the annual bird banding program. In October, we will again be photographing the adorable Saw-whet owls, in that interational banding and monitoring program.
If you missed this last year, you won't want to miss it this time around! WATCH THE SLIDESHOW
The Nature Photography Workshop begin on the Friday evening, with a wine and cheese reception, a group orientation and discussion, and slideshow. We'll have a brief instructional session and then hit the beach in time for sunset shooting and later (Friday or Saturday) a beach bonfire and weenie roast!.
Please bring 10 images with you to share, and as a sample of your "before" for the before and after slideshow. If you have prints please make arrangements with us prior the workshop to have them scanned.
Depending on the program you're registered for, we'll be staying in the historic and rustic Mallard Lodge on the beach at Delta Marsh, on mysterious Lake Manitoba. Legend has it that the Lodge was home to Clark Gable on his many hunting expeditions to the marsh in the past. Mallard Lodge is now the heart of the Delta Marsh Research Field Station, part of the University of Manitoba.
All accommodations, meals, snacks and refreshments are provided and are included in your registration fee. Rooms are simple dormitory style, with shared bathrooms. Depending on enrollment, shared accommodations may also be required.
The October Immersion Weekend accommodations are always in the historic Mallard Lodge, while the other programs take advantage of the field stations modern dorms. The nature photography workshops conclude on Sunday after lunch around 3:00 with the weekend "best of" photo competition. What it Costs
